Privacy Policy

Last updated: 15 June 2025

This page explains what information UnitCMS (unitcms.net) collects when you visit, why we collect it, and what control you have over it. We are a small, independent content site about WordPress, Shopify, website builders and headless CMS platforms. We have tried to keep this policy short and in plain English.

Who “we” are

“We”, “us” and “this site” refer to UnitCMS, the independent publication at unitcms.net. We publish guides, comparisons and CMS news. We are not affiliated with any of the platforms we write about unless an article says so.

The short version

  • You can read everything on this site without creating an account or giving us your name or email.
  • Our web server keeps standard technical logs, as nearly every website does.
  • We use a small number of cookies. Some are needed for the site to work. Others come from analytics or advertising partners we may use.
  • Videos and social posts embedded from other sites can set their own cookies.
  • Tools on this site that say they run in your browser process your input on your own device. We do not receive that input.
  • We do not sell your personal data.
  • You can ask what we hold about you and ask us to delete it.

Information collected automatically

Server logs

When your browser requests a page, our hosting server records basic technical details. This happens on almost every website and is mainly used to keep the site running, fix errors and block abuse. A typical log entry includes:

  • Your IP address
  • The date and time of the request
  • The page or file requested
  • Your browser type and operating system (the “user agent”)
  • The referring page, if your browser sends it
  • The response status, such as whether the page loaded or returned an error

We do not use server logs to build profiles of individual readers. We look at them when something breaks, when we see unusual traffic such as spam bots or attacks, or to understand general load on the site.

Security and performance services

We may route traffic through a content delivery network or security service to speed up page loads and filter malicious requests. These services process your IP address and request details in order to do that job. They may set a strictly necessary cookie to tell genuine visitors apart from automated attacks.

Cookies

Cookies are small text files a website stores in your browser. Similar technologies, such as local storage and tracking pixels, work in comparable ways, and we treat them the same way in this policy.

Cookies we set ourselves

We keep these to a minimum. They may include cookies that:

  • Remember your cookie consent choice, so we don’t ask you on every page
  • Remember display preferences, such as a light or dark theme, if the site offers one
  • Support basic security features

These cookies don’t identify you by name and are not used for advertising.

Analytics cookies

We may use an analytics service to understand which articles people read, how they find the site and which pages need improving. Analytics tools typically collect:

  • Pages viewed and time spent on them
  • Approximate location, usually country or city, derived from your IP address
  • Device type, browser and screen size
  • How you arrived, such as from a search engine or another website

We use this information in aggregate. Questions like “Which WordPress guides are most popular?” matter to us. Who you are personally does not. Where the option exists, we configure analytics to shorten or anonymise IP addresses.

Advertising cookies

To keep the site free, we may show ads from third-party advertising networks. These networks can use cookies and similar technologies to:

  • Show ads and limit how often you see the same one
  • Measure whether ads are viewed or clicked
  • Show ads based on your interests, using data collected across many websites

When we work with an advertising partner, that partner acts under its own privacy policy, and we will name it on this page. Where the law requires your consent for personalised ads, we will ask before those cookies load.

Affiliate links

Some articles may contain affiliate links to products or services. If you click one, the merchant or affiliate network may set a cookie to record that you came from this site. That way we can earn a commission if you buy something. We do not receive your name, payment details or what you purchased beyond the information needed to credit the referral.

Managing cookies

You have several ways to control cookies:

  • Our consent banner or settings: where we show one, you can accept or reject non-essential cookies and change your choice later.
  • Your browser settings: all major browsers let you block or delete cookies. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may break parts of the site.
  • Industry opt-out tools: many ad networks honour opt-outs set through their own preference pages or through browser privacy controls.
  • Global Privacy Control: where we are able to detect this browser signal, we treat it as a request to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal data for advertising.

Embedded content from other sites

Articles may include embedded content such as YouTube videos, social media posts, code snippets or product demos. Embedded content behaves exactly as if you had visited the other website. That site may:

  • Collect data about you
  • Set its own cookies
  • Track your interaction with the embedded content, especially if you are logged in to that service

We don’t control what these third parties collect. Their own privacy policies apply. Where practical, we use privacy-enhanced embed options, such as video players that don’t set cookies until you press play.

Tools that run in your browser

Some tools on this site, such as calculators, formatters or code generators, run entirely in your browser. When a tool says it runs in your browser:

  • The text, files or settings you enter are processed on your own device
  • That input is not sent to our server or stored by us
  • Closing or refreshing the page clears it, unless the tool says it saves settings locally on your device

If a tool ever needs to send data to a server to work, we will say so clearly on that tool’s page before you use it.

Information you choose to give us

You don’t need to give us any personal information to use this site. If you choose to contact us, comment on an article, or sign up for email updates (where those features exist), we will receive what you send. That usually means your name, your email address and your message.

We use this information only to:

  • Reply to you
  • Display your comment, if you posted one publicly
  • Send the emails you signed up for

Every marketing email will include an unsubscribe option. We will not add you to a mailing list because you contacted us.

How we use information

To summarise, we use the information described above to:

  • Run, secure and maintain the site
  • Fix technical problems
  • Understand which content is useful so we can improve it
  • Show ads and measure their performance, where we run ads
  • Respond to messages you send us
  • Meet legal obligations

Depending on where you live, data protection law may require a legal basis for each use. Ours are your consent (for non-essential cookies and email sign-ups), our legitimate interest in running a secure and useful website (for server logs and basic analytics), and legal obligations where they apply.

Who we share information with

We share information only with service providers that help us run the site, and only as much as they need. These may include:

  • Our web hosting provider
  • Content delivery and security services
  • Analytics providers
  • Advertising networks and affiliate partners
  • Email delivery services, if we run a newsletter

We may also disclose information if the law requires it, such as in response to a valid legal request, or to protect the site and its readers from fraud or abuse.

We do not sell your personal data

We do not sell, rent or trade your personal information. Some privacy laws define “sale” or “sharing” broadly enough to include certain advertising cookies. If we run personalised ads, you can opt out using the methods in the cookies section above, and we will honour that choice.

How long we keep data

We keep information only as long as we need it:

Type of data How long we keep it
Server logs Usually a few weeks, then deleted or rotated automatically. Longer only if we are investigating a security issue.
Analytics data Kept in aggregate form. Where the analytics tool allows it, we set the shortest retention period that still lets us see year-on-year trends.
Cookie consent record Typically up to 12 months, after which we may ask again.
Messages you send us As long as needed to deal with your request, then deleted unless there is an ongoing reason to keep them.
Newsletter subscriptions Until you unsubscribe.
Published comments Until you ask us to remove them, or we remove them under our moderation choices.

Third-party services, such as advertising networks and embedded platforms, set their own retention periods under their own policies.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

  • Ask what personal data we hold about you and get a copy
  • Correct information that is wrong
  • Delete your personal data
  • Object to or restrict how we use it
  • Withdraw consent at any time, for example by changing your cookie settings or unsubscribing
  • Opt out of the sale or sharing of personal data for targeted advertising
  • Complain to your local data protection authority

Even if your local law doesn’t grant these rights, you can still ask. We will do our best to help.

To make a request, use the contact method listed on this site. Tell us what you are asking for and include any details that help us find your data, such as the email address you used to contact us. We may need to confirm your identity before acting on a request. We will respond within the time required by the law that applies to you, and we won’t charge a fee for reasonable requests.

Please keep in mind that we often can’t link anonymous browsing data, such as analytics or server logs, to a specific person. For data held by advertising or embedded platforms, you will usually get faster results by contacting those companies directly.

Children

This site is written for adults interested in web publishing and content management. It isn’t directed at children, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

Security

We take reasonable steps to protect the information we handle. These include serving the site over HTTPS, keeping software up to date and limiting access to logs and accounts. No website can guarantee complete security, but we treat your data with care and act quickly if something goes wrong.

International data transfers

Our hosting, analytics and advertising providers may process data in countries other than your own. Where data protection law requires it, we rely on the safeguards those providers offer for international transfers.

Changes to this policy

We will update this page when our practices change, for example when we add a new analytics tool, advertising partner or site feature. The “Last updated” date at the top will always show when it last changed. If we make a significant change, we will make it clear on the site.

Contact

If you have a question about this policy or want to exercise any of your privacy rights, please reach us through the contact method listed on this site. We read every message and will reply as soon as we can.
